Lila P. LaGrange, Ph.D., postdoctoral fellow in the department of physiology, received the Outstanding Postdoctoral Applicant Award for 2004 from the American Heart Association (AHA).
“The AHA is very proud to be able to support postdoctoral fellows, and it is noteworthy that Dr. LaGrange’s grant was selected as the very best among all of the proposals submitted for postdoctoral funding,” said Greg Freeman, M.D., professor in the department of medicine. “The work she will do is significant, and the AHA is anxious that her career have a successful beginning. As chairman of the Affiliate Research Allocations and Advisory Committee I was particularly pleased that an applicant from our institution prevailed in this competition.”
This is the inaugural year for the award, which is given to a postdoctoral fellow whose application received the highest score among postdoctoral research proposals submitted to the American Heart Association in 2004. This award consists of an additional $1,000 per year for the duration of the two-year fellowship.
Dr. LaGrange is a member of the American Heart Association, the American Physiological Society and the Society for Neuroscience. She is a recipient of several awards including the Barbara H. Bowman Postdoctoral Research Award from the Health Science Center, the Caroline tum Suden/Frances A. Hellebrandt Professional Opportunity Award from the American Physiological Society and the Graduate Student Leadership Award from the Women’s Faculty Association. Dr. LaGrange’s research focuses on the cellular mechanisms by which sodium and circulating hormones, such as angiotensin II, contribute to cardiovascular disease. Dr. LaGrange received her bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University, College Station, and her doctorate from The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
