Teaching Excellence and Academic Skills (TEXAS) presents professional development workshops and courses to enhance teaching and scholarship at the Health Science Center. TEXAS programs are available without charge.

TEXAS programs are conducted by the division of educational research and development in the department of academic informatics services. The primary professional development program in October will be the 28th annual UTEC class (UTHSCSA Teaching Excellence Course) that meets Wednesdays from 4 – 6 pm. To register for UTEC, call Bill Hendricson at (210) 567-2813 or send an e-mail to hendricson@uthscsa.edu.

October 6
Strategies for handling difficult teaching situations

4 to 6 p.m.
Room 4.484T in the Dental School
A process for assessing students who exhibit undesirable behavior or performance is introduced and participant teams use this process to analyze scenarios of problem students and develop action plans to address the students’ issues.

October 13
Web-based learning

4 to 6 p.m.
Room 4.484T in the Dental School
Are you curious about how you could incorporate web-based instruction into your course? This class provides an overview of two types of web-based courses: WebCT and Blackboard. Features and capacities of both online course management systems are compared and strategies for effective use of online instruction are demonstrated.

October 20
Practice Teaching: Classroom Lecture

4 to 6 p.m.
Room 4.484T in the Dental School
Participants present a 10-minute lecture to classmates. Other team members provide feedback on clarity, organization, visual materials and delivery style. The mini-lectures are videotaped so participants can self-critique their presentations.

October 27
Best Practices for Evaluating Learner Performance

4 to 6 p.m.
Room 4.484T in the Dental School
Participants identify barriers to making correct evaluation decisions and learn best practice strategies for learner evaluation. Participants then self-asses the degree to which their departments employ best practices in their evaluation system. Differences between competency-based and traditional evaluation methods are also reviewed.

Coming in November there will be programs on Web-based learning. Watch for registration announcements. All programs will begin at noon.
