Library welcomes National Library of Medicine associate fellow

Julie Gaines, National Library of Medicine associate fellow, has selected the Health Science Center Library for her second year fellowship. The associate fellowship is designed to prepare librarians for future leadership roles in health sciences libraries.

During her first year, Gaines received training at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Md. through lectures, discussions, hands-on experience and formal classes designed to develop problem-solving skills. She focused on individualized projects related to health/GIS mapping and the National Institutes of Health SeniorHealth Web site. In her second year, she will work with Health Science Center librarians, administrators, and faculty to design and implement programs that directly contribute to the Library’s mission.

Gaines earned a master’s degree in library and information science degree from the University of South Carolina, Columbia. While working on her graduate degree, Gaines worked as a graduate assistant at Lexington Medical Center where she focused on consumer health and promotion of health literacy. Gaines also interned at the South Carolina State Library, developing a summer reading program website for South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi and Alabama. Julie holds a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Lander University in Greenwood, S.C.
