The Reach Out and Read programs of the Health Science Center are pleased to announce their holiday card program which features children’s artwork that has been made into holiday cards that are now on sale. Proceeds from the card sales will be used to purchase books for the Reach Out and Read programs at the Health Science Center.

Reach Out and Read is a national, nonprofit program that seeks to improve early literacy by intervening with families during their visits to the clinic for well child check-ups. Children who live in an environment with books and are read to in their preschool years are much more likely to learn to read on schedule. In the Reach Out and Read Program, physicians educate parents about the importance of reading to their young children, offering age-appropriate tips and encouragement. At every well-child check-up between ages 6 months and 5 years, the child is given a new, developmentally appropriate book to take home and keep. Through the Reach Out and Read program, children start school with a home library of nine books.

The Children’s Health Center and the Premiere Program house two active Reach Out and Read programs. Currently, these programs are distributing about 3,200 books per year to children in San Antonio. The children followed in these clinics are at high risk for reading and school difficulties. The Reach Out and Read Program is designed to help these children. For more information on the Reach Out and Read programs visit: www.reachoutandread.org.

Brochures for the cards can be obtained by clicking on the link below or by calling (210) 562-5344. The price for the cards is $10 for twenty cards, with an additional charge for shipping. There are 10 different designs to choose from. This card project was made possible by a generous grant from the San Antonio Area Foundation and the Semp Russ Foundation. The cards feature artwork by children at University Hospital, Santa Rosa Hospital and the Children’s Health Center.
