Multimedia and web services, with funding from the SBC Virtual Campus Grant, has created a new interactive map finding system that allows the Health Science Center community and visitors to find campus buildings, public meeting rooms, departments and executive office areas.
The mapping system, which has been in development for more than a year and a half, allows users to click on buildings on the main campus, north campus and the Texas Research Park to see views of the buildings, select panoramic virtual reality images of key areas and access department maps located within the building. This visual aid will help visitors easily identify campus locations. The system includes area maps for the Laredo, Harlingen and Edinburg campuses as well.
The system also allows the user to search for specific public areas, lecture halls, conference rooms and departments on each of the campuses. Users are now able to e-mail a link to a specific map, allowing recipients an easy way to locate conference rooms, classrooms, key offices and parking information on short notice. Technical staff will also be integrating the campus maps with the campus Calender of Events soon.
The mapping system has a link on the Health Science Center’s home page under ‘Campus Maps’ and can also be found at
www.utmaps.uthscsa.edu.
In addition to being located on the Web, the mapping system will also be set up at the information desk in the new Student Services and Academic Administration building. Visitors will be able to browse the mapping system and print out maps.
The mapping system will continue to grow and adapt to meet the needs of its users. Multimedia and web services invites the Health Science Center community to use and explore the mapping system and provide feedback. For comments and questions send an e-mail to
mapgroup@uthscsa.edu.
The concept for a campus mapping system was introduced by Jerry York, vice president and chief information officer. The technical and creative design of the map system was developed by Michael Arnwine and David Baker and members of the creative design staff of the division of multimedia and web services. The mapping system was also developed with the help of planning and scheduling in student services, telecommunications and networking, computing resources and facilities management.
