Javier Kane, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics in the division of hematology/ oncology/immunology at the Health Science Center and director of the pediatric palliative care program at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital, has received the Champions Award from the Texas Partnership for End-of-Life Care.
Dr. Kane is being honored for his many years of innovative and caring work with children at the end of their lives, especially for his work in the Pediatric Palliative Care program. The Texas Partnership for End-of-Life Care, is a state advocacy organization for end-of-life care in Texas.
The Pediatric Palliative Care program is a joint effort of the Health Science Center, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital and CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Home Health and Hospice. The program, the first of its kind to be developed in San Antonio and one of only a handful in the United States, provides physical, emotional and spiritual support to children suffering from terminal, chronic and life-threatening illnesses and their families with the goal to minimize suffering and achieve the best possible quality of life. The program has provided care for more than 250 children.
Dr. Kane has also has won the UTHSCSA 2001 Humanism in Medicine award and the 2003 Sister Frances Dominica Award for Innovative Program Development from the Children’s Hospice International (CHI) in recognition of his work in the palliative care of seriously ill children and their families.
