Edward Y. Sako, M.D., Ph. D., associate professor in the department of surgery and chief of surgery at the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital (VA), was appointed to the J. Kent Trinkle Chair in Thoracic Surgery, at a reception on Dec. 14.
Dr. Sako was unanimously recommended for appointment to the chair by the Medical School’s Faculty Endowment Committee.
At the reception, John Calhoon, M.D., chief of thoracic surgery and holder of the Calhoon President’s Council Chair for Excellence in Surgery, transferred the Trinkle chair to Dr. Sako.
"Dr. Sako has brought unique talents to the Health Science Center and has been the best partner a group could have," Dr. Calhoon said. "He has made the VA and the Health Science Center proud."
Dr. Sako, who has been at the Health Science Center since 1992, has been listed in the ‘Best Doctors in America’ by Woodward/White in 1998-1999 and 2003-2004. He also received the Surgical Education Research Fellowship from The Association for Surgical Education in 1998.
He received a medical doctorate and a doctorate in surgery from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine, Minneapolis. His current research interests include resident and medical student education, thoracic transplantation, mitral valve repair surgery and adult cardiac and thoracic surgery.
“Dr. Trinkle taught me all that I know, but unfortunately did not teach me all he knew,” Dr. Calhoon said.
