Komen Foundation’s SA Affiliate accepting grant proposalsThe San Antonio Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation recently provided community grants totaling more than $700,000 in support of area breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment programs.
A portion of that funding has been set aside for small grants to fund breast cancer-specific projects. Applicants must provide proof of non-profit status. Participants must be residents of, and/or the activities must benefit, residents of Bexar County. Grants are not available for fund-raising activities, research projects, for-profit organizations or salaries.
Applications are required a minimum of 30 days prior to when funding is needed. For guidelines and the grant application, call Jerilyn Miller at (210) 222-9009, or send an e-mail at

Local fund-raising efforts have enabled support of many worthwhile area projects. Seventy-five percent of monies raised by the Komen San Antonio Affiliate stay in the community to support local breast health education, breast cancer screening and treatment programs. The remaining 25 percent supports the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation Award and Research Grant Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards, and educational and scientific programs around the world.
The eighth annual Komen San Antonio Race for the Cure® is scheduled for Saturday April 2.
5th annual Southern States Knowledge in Nursing Conference is April 15 - 16The 5th Annual Southern States Knowledge in Nursing Conference: Advancing Knowledge of Minority Women & Children’s Health is scheduled for April 15 – 16, at the Hilton Airport Hotel San Antonio. The conference provides exploration of current knowledge base and clinical information of health outcomes for women and children by integrating research into education, scholarships and practice.
This conference will provide an opportunity for participants to: create collaborative networks between practitioners, educators and researchers; discuss critical key issues of women and children’s health promotion; identify unique aspects of healthcare issues in delivery of women and children’s health care to non-traditional recipients, and discuss research findings about women and children’s health promotion.
Speakers include: Frances E. Ashe-Goins, deputy director and division director of policy and program development, D.H.H.S., at the Office on Women’s Health; Jacquelyn C. Campbell, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N., associate dean for faculty affairs; Cheryl Beck DnSc, C.N.M., F.A.A.N., professor, University of Connecticut; King Davis, Ph.D., executive director of the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health Services, Research, Policy and Education, The University of Texas at Austin.
