Dr. Charles R. Thomas Jr., professor and vice chairman in the department of radiation oncology, is the new chair of the GI Committee of the Patterns of Care Study within the American College of Radiology (ACR).
The ACR is one of the largest cancer specialty organizations in the world, serving the interests of physicians and health care professionals in all radiology-related subspecialties.
At major research forums, Dr. Thomas has presented on the patterns of care for rectal cancer over the past decade by North American radiation oncologists.
The Patterns of Care Study (PCS), supported by a grant from the National Cancer Institute and administered by the ACR, has conducted surveys of the structure, process and outcomes of care for patients treated with radiation therapy for more than 25 years.
PCS, in operation since 1973, seeks to improve the quality of care received by cancer patients by conducting national surveys of radiation therapy delivery. The data collected on practice setting, new technologies and other factors likely to influence patient care are used to determine the structure, process and outcome for patients treated with radiation therapy.
