The Faculty Senate met on Jan 12. Below are bullets from the meeting. The complete minutes of the January meeting, as well as those from previous meetings, can be found at: www.uthscsa.edu/facultygovt/minutesUniversity Updates: Steven Wartman, M.D., Ph.D., executive vice president for academic and health affairs and dean, School of Medicine, announced his resignation which will be effective April 29. He looks forward to being an advocate for academic health science centers in his new position as President of the Association for Academic Health Centers in Washington, D.C.Pedro Delgado, M.D. from Case Western Reserve University has been named chair of the department of psychiatry and dean for professional affairs.Sloan Report:The report submitted to the Executive Committee from the ad hoc Committee on Promotion and Tenure (chaired by Dr. Tod Sloan) has been widely distributed in hopes that the recommendations made by the committee will receive broad support at all levels of the university. Discussion: Do We Need an Ombudsman at the Health Science Center?Dr. Deborah Baruch-Bienen, senator from the School of Medicine, presented an overview describing the functions of an ombudsman.Bonnie Blankmeyer, Ph.D., professor and director of the employee equal opportunity and affirmative actions office, provided the Senate with an historical view of the evolution and service to the Health Science Center provided by her office. In addition, she reminded the Senate that the employee grievance process on our campus is described in the Handbook of Operating Procedures (Chapter 4, Sections 4.2 and 4.9). These policies were recently revised to be brought into compliance with governmental and Regent’s guidelines.Keith Krolick, Ph.D., Senate chair, led the Faculty Senate in a discussion whether there is a need for an official ombudsman position to be created on our campus.
