The Health Science Center honored faculty and staff for their service in a ceremony Jan. 21.

Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., president of the Health Science Center, also conferred the Presidential Junior Research Scholar Award, three Presidential Clinical Excellence Awards, six Presidential Teaching Excellence Awards and five Presidential Employee Excellence in Service Awards.

Hanna Abboud, M.D., professor of medicine and chief of nephrology, was honored with the Health Science Center's highest honor, the 2005 Presidential Distinguished Scholar Award.

Dr. Abboud is one of the world’s leaders in the research and treatment of kidney disease. Under his leadership, the Health Science Center’s clinical nephrology program offered at University Hospital has been ranked among the top 50 programs in the country since 2000, according to U.S. News & World Report. The dialysis and renal transplant programs have doubled in size. Dr. Abboud also orchestrated the merger of the Wilford Hall Clinical Nephrology Fellowship Program with the program at the Health Science Center, resulting in a very substantial enhancement of the Health Science Center's post-graduate training in nephrology.
