Twenty-nine outstanding faculty and staff members have completed the 2004 University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio Teaching Excellence Course (UTEC).
In December they received their certificates of completion after completing the 36-hour professional development course. The participants gained experience in evaluating student performance, planning courses and writing lesson plans, teaching psychomotor skills, presenting lectures, creating PowerPoint presentations, working with challenging students, providing feedback, developing Web-based courses and using small group case-based learning methods. In addition, they were introduced to cognitive research pertinent to the health professions education and analyzed their own teaching strategies.
December 2004 marked the course’s twenty-ninth year and now has more than 700 graduates. It is believed to be the longest continuously run teaching enhancement course at any United States health science center.
Bill Hendricson is the course director and Drs. David Henzi and Aggie Manwell-Jackson were instructors this year. UTEC classes will be conducted again in the fall by the division of educational research and development in the academic and informatics services department.
