Marking the start of Severe Weather Awareness Week, basic and advanced Skywarn spotter training classes will be held Saturday, Mar. 5, in lecture hall 3.102.

Skywarn is a partnership between the National Weather Service (NWS) and the community, designed to help reduce the threat from severe weather. The emphasis of the effort is often focused on the storm spotter, an individual who takes a position near their community and reports wind gusts, hail size, rainfall, and cloud formations that could signal a developing tornado. Skywarn Storm Spotters help to provide the citizens of their community with potentially life-saving information.

At 9 a.m., representatives from the NWS and local media will speak about severe weather and safety measures individuals can take during a time of severe weather.

The class is co-sponsored by the Austin/San Antonio Weather Service office, Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) and Alamo Area Radio Organization. For more information or a schedule of the event, contact Charles Thomas at (210) 567-3911 or e-mail Thomas@uthscsa.edu.
