Pruitt elected as president of Southern Surgical Association

Basil Pruitt Jr., M.D., clinical professor of surgery at the Health Science Center and former longtime director of Brooke Army Medical Center’s famed burn treatment center, was elected president of the Southern Surgical Association recently in Palm Beach, Fla.

From 1968 to 1995, Dr. Pruitt served as commander and director of the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research, which operates the world-renowned Army Burn Center in San Antonio. Military personnel and others worldwide are transferred to the center for specialized and innovative burn treatment.

Dr. Pruitt also has served as president of the American Burn Association, the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Surgical Infection Society, the North American Burn Society, the Halsted Society, the Western Surgical Association, the International Society for Burn Injuries, the American Trauma Society and the American Surgical Association. He has authored or co-authored 435 published papers, 162 textbook chapters, and 12 books and monographs.

Dr. Pruitt is a 1952 Harvard graduate and a 1957 graduate of the Tufts University School of Medicine. He will preside over the Southern Surgical Association’s 117th annual meeting this December at The Homestead, an historic resort in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
