High school students, parents, school counselors and interested area residents are invited to register for the upcoming Allied Health Professions Fair at the Health Science Center.
The fair, which is free and open to the public with advance registration, is set for 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 9, in the Allied Health/Research Building at the Health Science Center’s North Campus, 8403 Floyd Curl Dr. in the South Texas Medical Center. Advance registration is encouraged by Friday, April 1. Please call (210) 567-8800 to register or for more information.
Individuals who attend the fair will observe demonstrations and participate in hands-on activities that serve as introductions to physical therapy, occupational therapy, clinical laboratory sciences, dental hygiene, dental laboratory technology, emergency health sciences, deaf education, respiratory care and physician assistant studies. The School of Allied Health Sciences at the Health Science Center offers degree and certificate programs in each of these vital fields.
The job market has never been better for allied health professionals, says Douglas Murphy, Ph.D., associate dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences. “In fact, there is a dire shortage of workers in almost all of these professions, very similar to the nursing shortage,” Dr. Murphy says.
The fun activities at the fair will include a physician assistant booth where attendees can practice suturing a wound or setting a splint on a spongy material that responds like flesh.
