Shepherd helps draft new Medicaid prescription drug benefit guidelines

Alexander M.M. Shepherd, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.H.A., was elected by the U.S. government and the U.S. Pharmacopoeia as vice chair of the Medicare Model Guidelines Committee, developing guidelines for the new Medicaid program for the elderly.

Dr. Shepherd met with the committee approximately every two weeks in the Washington, D.C., area since May 2004. The guidelines were sent to the Center for Medicaid Services at the end of December.

This is the committee chosen by the government to work on the Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit Model Guidelines. Dr. Shepherd is professor of medicine and pharmacology at the Health Science Center and chief of the division of clinical pharmacology. F.A.H.A. stands for Fellow of the American Heart Association.

The committee will meet on an ongoing basis to revise the guidelines. Congratulations to Dr. Shepherd for his distinguished service.
