The Health Science Center will celebrate the grand opening of the Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies on May 2, and faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend.

The Institute is named after entrepreneur and philanthropist Sam Barshop and his wife, Ann. It will house scientists and researchers from the Health Science Center’s renowned aging research programs.

The dedication ceremony will begin at noon at the Health Science Center’s Texas Research Park campus. The keynote address will be delivered by Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison. Special guests will include Mark Yudof, chancellor of the University of Texas System and many other dignitaries

A reception will follow the dedication. If you plan to attend the ceremony, please R.S.V.P.: peralesp@uthscsa.edu.

In 1992, the Health Science Center established the Aging Research and Education Center (AREC). After the Sam and Ann Barshop Center for Longevity and Aging Studies was established by the U.T. Board of Regents, the AREC became fully integrated in the Barshop Center and the name was changed to Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies.

The Health Science Center’s aging program is unique with over 160 people, involving faculty from all five schools of the Health Science Center, The South Texas Veterans Health Care System, Audie L. Murphy Division; Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, The University of Texas at Austin and The University of Texas at San Antonio. Health Science Center faculty members generate more than $100 million in total research dollars for aging-related training and research grants.
