Bullets from the April 13 meeting of the Faculty Senate

The Faculty Senate met on April 13. Below are bullets from the meeting. The complete minutes of the March meeting, as well as those from previous meetings, can be found at:< http://www.uthscsa.edu/facultygovt/>

Overview: Academic Center for Excellence in Teaching (ACET) Larry Barnes, Ph.D., professor and deputy chair in the biochemistry department, presented an overview of recent activities pursued by the ACET Planning Group for which he served as chair. The planning group, co-chaired by Kathleen Stevens, Ed.D., R.N., professor in family nursing, was charged by Dr. Wartman to gather information concerning teaching centers found at other universities, and to develop the basic conceptual framework that would allow such a center to be created on our campus. The ACET mission, described in part in the University Compact, will be to provide leadership, direction, and resources that advance excellence in teaching at the Health Science Center.

Overview: Office of Institutional Analysis
Sally Blakley, director of the office of institutional analysis, presented an overview of the goals of her office which, in general, is to create a centralized warehouse of electronically archived information and institutional data necessary to respond to the various accountability/compliance reporting requests from the UT System and the Coordinating Board; as well as to monitor certain activities involving the University Compact, future strategic planning, and preparations for the upcoming SACS accreditation review.

Chair’s Update
Keith Krolick, Ph.D., chair, Faculty Senate, presented topics of concern to the senators. These included: 1) Status of Senate Bylaws revisions; 2) Senate’s Faculty Leadership Award to be officially presented at the first meeting of the 2005-2006 academic year; and 3) Efforts to enhance awareness and participation in Faculty Senate activities by faculty members of remote/distant Health Science Center campuses.

Senate Committee Report: Kyumin Whang, chair, faculty welfare and development committee.

The next meeting of the Faculty Senate will be held on May 11, 2005.



Fifth ERM workshop is May 25

The 2005 Education Research Methods (ERM) course, sponsored by the Education Research and Development of Academic Informatics Services, presents the fifth workshop in the series, “Introduction to Qualitative Research.”

The workshop, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 25 in Room 4.484T in the Dental School, will include a presentation addressing description of qualitative research, when it is applicable, how data is gathered and analyzed, and the basis for data value. Participants will practice beginning skills in small groups.

The course will be presented by Cindy Alford, Ph.D., assistant professor of family and community medicine.

Faculty who attend all 12 ERM sessions will receive a letter of completion sent to their department chair and a course completion certificate.



Delta Alpha Chapter at Large inducts new members

Approximately 90 Delta Alpha Chapter at Large members, including individuals from the nursing schools at the Health Science Center and the University of the Incarnate Word, will be inducted into Sigma Theta Tau Intl., the nursing international honor society.

Individuals elected to membership must be in the top 30 percent of their graduating class or be nurse leaders.

The Delta Alpha Chapter induction will take place at 7 p.m. on April 28 at the Sky Room of the University of the Incarnate Word. Family and friends are encouraged to attend the ceremony.

The collaboration between the Health Science Center and the University of the Incarnate Word was developed in 2004. It improves the quality of baccalaureate nursing education in San Antonio.
