April 24 marked the beginning of National Medical Laboratory Week (NMLW), and lab professionals and pathologists at the Health Science Center and University Hospital celebrated by hosting and participating in many special events.
From crazy lab coat day to community service at the pediatric unit at University Hospital, it was lab professionals’ and pathologists’ week to be recognized. Gifts, displays and tours of laboratories were among the festivities.
Sponsors throughout San Antonio donated to the Health Science Center specifically for NMLW and gave special presentations throughout the week, including a microscope presentation and information about Hepatitis C.
“We try to make people aware that laboratory jobs are available,” said Lauren Chesnut, technical director in the electron microscopy lab and chair of the project planning for NMLW. “There is a critical level of shortage and we need to encourage others to consider becoming a lab professional.”
NMLW is a week during which more than 265,000 medical lab professionals and 15,000 board-certified pathologists are recognized throughout the nation.
