The department of medicine will highlight clinical and basic medical research at its Eighth Annual Research Day. The event will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 10.

This year’s distinguished speaker is Helen H. Hobbs, M.D., investigator for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and professor of internal medicine and molecular genetics at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Dr. Hobbs will present Genetic Protection Against Cholesterol Accumulation and Atherosclerosis at 4 p.m. in the Medical building, Room 409L.

“We are very enthusiastic about this year’s Medicine Research Day,” said Robert A. Clark, M.D., professor and Dan F. Parman Distinguished Chairman of Medicine. “I am proud of our young faculty and trainees for the excellent work they are doing across the full spectrum of basic and clinical research. This event provides a wonderful venue to highlight their accomplishments for the entire Health Science Center community. Dr. Helen Hobbs is a superb physician-scientist who has made important contributions in the area of genetic disorders of lipids and cardiovascular disease. May 10 promises to be an exciting day for us all.”

Research Day will also feature a panel discussion, The Impact of Ethnicity in Human Disease, and poster and oral presentations from faculty, fellows, medical residents and students. Select oral presentations will be from 1 to 2 p.m. in Room 209L. A poster display will be set up from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the auditorium foyer. Awards will be presented for the best presentations in each of these categories.

Girl Scouts benefit from collaborative effort between two HSC schools

The School of Nursing and the School of Allied Health Sciences physician assistant (P.A.) studies program collaborated last month to provide quality physicals to 148 Girl Scouts of San Antonio. The physical fees were then donated to the Girl Scouts to be used for scholarships.

The physicals were necessary for each girl who wished to attend any 2005 Girl Scout camp.

“It is a nice way to give to the community,” said Margaret H. Brackley, Ph.D., A.P.R.N., BC, professor and director of the Center for Violence Prevention in the department of family nursing care. “It’s also a great way to let others know about the Health Science Center and the nurse practitioner and P.A. studies programs.”

Ten P.A. students and eight family nurse practitioner students devoted their time to the Girl Scout physicals and both departments are looking forward to assisting with physicals next year as well. Nursing students in the flexible process course did height, weight, vision and hearing testing as well.

“We had a lot of comments on how quickly and how well the physicals went,” said Jean Larose of the Girl Scouts of the San Antonio Area. “We thank each and every person from the Health Science Center who helped make the 2005 Camp Physical Night possible.”

Fifth ERM workshop is May 25

The 2005 Education Research Methods (ERM) course, sponsored by the Education Research and Development of Academic Informatics Services, presents the fifth workshop in the series, “Introduction to Qualitative Research.”

The workshop, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 25 in Room 4.484T in the Dental School, will include a presentation addressing description of qualitative research, when it is applicable, how data is gathered and analyzed, and the basis for data value. Participants will practice beginning skills in small groups.

The course will be presented by Cindy Alford, Ph.D., assistant professor of family and community medicine.

The registration deadline for the course is May 20. Questions about ERM can be directed to Dr. David Henzi: (210) 567-2290 or e-mail: henzi@uthscsa.edu. To register for the course click on: erdweb.uthscsa.edu/register/prog.asp?Prog=41.
