Campus Update: Theresa Chiang, Ed.D., vice president for academic administration:

Dr. Chiang updated the senate on various Health Science Center recruitments, including the search for a new medical dean and a discussion of how to replace Anthony Infante, M.D., Ph.D., associate dean for research and professor of pediatrics, and microbiology and immunology, who will take on the role of President of the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research beginning June 1 (Congratulations, Tony). In addition, with accountability reporting of major interest at the UT System, and the SACS review coming up in 2008, she also described Compact/Strategic Planning which will be a central activity in her office for the foreseeable future.

Overview: Joint UTHSCSA-UTSA Leadership Development Program

Jan Patterson, M.D., professor of medicine/infectious disease, presented an overview of the recent activities a planning committee composed of faculty and staff from the Health Science Center and UTSA, whose charge it is to create a new Leadership Development Program, based in part on successful models found at other universities, designed to provide specialized training to administrative leaders on our campus.

Chair’s Update
Keith Krolick, Ph.D., chair of the Faculty Senate, presented topics of concern to the senators. These included: 1) Reminder that senate elections must be held by each of the schools; 2) The results of a vote to forward a recommendation to the administration concerning the creation of a questionnaire to be given to exiting faculty to determine the reasons for their departure; 3) Senate’s Faculty Leadership Award to be officially presented at the first meeting of the 2005-2006 academic year; and 4) An overview and discussion of senate accomplishments this year and plans for next year.

The next meeting of the Faculty Senate will be held on June 8, 2005.
