C. Mauli Agrawal, Ph.D., professor of orthopaedics at the Health Science Center and professor of biomedical engineering at UTSA, was recently elected president of the world’s premier and largest group of scientists, engineers and physicians in the field of implant materials – the U.S. Society for Biomaterials. Dr. Agrawal is the director of the joint Biomedical Engineering Graduate Program between the Health Science Center and UTSA.

As president-elect of the Society for Biomaterials, which consists of approximately 2,000 members from 25 countries, Dr. Agrawal is responsible for the long-range planning of the society. He will remain president-elect of the society until 2006 when he will assume his position as president.
Although he does not plan to make major changes, he plans to develop a variety of ways to advance the society.

“It is my intention to develop ways in which the society can work closely with more clinical organizations such as the American Medical Association,” Dr. Agrawal said.
Dr. Agrawal joined the Society for Biomaterials in 1991 and has served as secretary-treasurer, and program chair for the society’s 2001 annual meeting.

“I am honored to get the recognition and trust from this international society,” Dr. Agrawal said.
