Larry Carter, a senior student this spring in the department of pharmacology, recently received the Phyllis and Neil Bowie Student Community Service Award. The Bowie Award is a Health Science Center-wide scholarship with a focus on community service.

The award is named for E. Phyllis Bowie, Ph.D., and her husband, Neal. Dr. Bowie, associate professor of cellular and structural biology, retired in 2003 after 34 years on the faculty.

Throughout her outstanding career, Dr. Bowie served as a mentor to many students and faculty members. Since 1993 she directed the Dental Gross Anatomy Course and co-directed the Dental Hygiene Structures of the Head and Neck Course. Dr. Bowie earned the admiration of her colleagues, students and community leaders. She received numerous awards and honors, including the Presidential Teaching Excellence Award in 1995.

Among his many activities, Carter served as chair of the annual Graduate Student Symposium and the student representative to the Committee on Graduate Studies. He also served as a judge for the Alamo Regional Academy of Science and Engineering’s Science Fair. In an essay, he wrote that he takes special pride in mentoring high school and college students.

Carter worked toward his Ph.D. under the mentorship of Charles France, Ph.D., professor of pharmacology. He was the 2003-2004 Department of Pharmacology Graduate Student of the Year and the 2004 Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Ambassador Scholar.

He is a co-author on nine peer-reviewed publications and has made 21 presentations at scientific meetings.
