The department of family and community medicine will give away free helmets to children who participate in the bike rodeo this year during the Health Science Center’s annual Fourth of July celebration. Helmets will be given on a first-come, first-serve basis at the celebration on June 24, between 8 and 11 a.m.
“Hard Hats for Little Heads” is a program designed to help Texas children prevent head injuries and promote safety while bicycling, in-line skating, skateboarding, and scooter riding. The program is sponsored in part by the Texas Academy of Family Physicians, Texas Medical Association Foundation and a grant from Prudential Financial.
Ashok Kumar, M.D., F.R.C.S., professor of family and community medicine, is coordinating the event with the U.T. Police. For more information about the free-helmet giveaway, contact Dr. Kumar:

Fourth of July Picnic is June 24Make sure you mark your calendar for the Fourth of July Picnic that will take place in the central campus courtyard area and Health Science Center auditorium foyer. The annual picnic will be from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and lunch will be catered by Bill Miller Bar-B-Q. Limited veggie plates will also available. Food serving begins at 11:30 a.m. Health Science Center ID badges are required.

The Office of Student Life and UT Police will sponsor a bike rodeo demonstrating safety to children, ages 7-12. This event is open to children of Health Science Center faculty, staff and students.
