The psychiatry department is seeking 30 pairs of individuals –one with bipolar disorder and their unaffected first-degree relative – for a study called “A Family Study of Brain Abnormalities in Bipolar Disorder.” The study, under the direction of Jair Soares, M.D., associate professor of psychiatry and Aaron and Bobbie Elliot Krus Chair, will investigate familial risks of the disorder.
It is estimated that up to 30 percent of children that have a parent with bipolar disorder, and up to 15 percent of those who have siblings with it will also suffer from the disorder.
Participants will be seen up to four times and will receive a psychiatric diagnostic interview, routine physical examinations, blood and urine tests, an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the brain, and neurocognitive testing.
Individuals will receive $95 for participating in the study.
