Twenty-three Health Science Center faculty members completed the Online Teaching and Learning Certification Course (Online TLC Course), conducted by the division of educational research and development (ERD) in the academic informatics services (AIS) department. This faculty development course took place June 7-30 and was conducted in a blended learning format that combined nine face-to-face workshops with online activities. Most face-to-face sessions were offered twice to accommodate demand and faculty schedules and were held in the computer training lab in the School of Allied Health Sciences. Course hardware and software were supported by the dean of the School of Allied Health Sciences, Marilyn Harrington, Ph.D., and staff, and Diane Mock King, computing resources training coordinator.

Each participant was assigned an individual WebCT Practice Course with which they developed an actual web-based course. Additionally, participants were informally partnered with a fellow faculty member and were interchangeably enrolled in each other’s courses for online practice and feedback opportunities. Course directors Aggie Manwell-Jackson, Ph.D., educational development specialist in the AIS department, and Ida Garcia, M.Ed., distance education specialist in the AIS department, provided face-to-face and online facilitation and evaluation with support from Diana Gonzalez, administrative secretary in the AIS department.

Five sessions focused on two major areas: 1.) general educational principals for online learning and 2.) applications of software programs available to Health Science Center faculty and considered pertinent to online learning. They included:

• Design Tips for Web-based Learning: ERES, Meridian, Bb and WebCT
• PowerPoint for the Web: How to Use Narrations & Impatica
• Respondus (create online test bank)
• SoftChalk (develop online content with interaction and upload to WebCT or Bb)
• Evaluation Tools, Best Practices and Course Close-Out in Bb & WebCT

Four sessions of the course allowed faculty to learn and practice the following features of the WebCT course management system:

• Basic I – syllabus, calendar, e-mail, discussions, chat, file management
• Basic II – manage students, grade book, create, submit, and grade assignments
• Intermediate – create question banks, self-tests, quizzes and surveys
• Advanced – course and content template development, options to create and edit course content in WebCT

A total of 39 faculty members registered for at least one session, and the 23 participants listed below completed the course and received the Online Teaching and Learning Certificate:
