The Health Science Center held its 9th Annual Medical Dean’s Convocation and White Coat Ceremony July 24 to welcome 206 first-year medical students. The initial ceremony greeted the incoming class of 1997 and continues to serve as a reminder to the students of the responsibility of becoming a health care professional.
More than 1,300 of the students’ friends and family gathered in the auditorium for the ceremony. Terence Doran, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of pediatrics, was the recipient of the 2005 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Faculty Award. Dr. Doran delivered the keynote address, giving his thoughts and reflections on medical school, the practice of medicine, and lessons to be learned.
The students received their white coats from faculty members and course directors and recited the Oath of Hippocrates, led by Lois Bready, M.D., associate dean for graduate medical education.
This week, members of the Class of 2009 will complete orientation and prepare for their first year as medical students.
