The Health Science Center’s annual Hispanic Heritage Week kicks off Monday, Sept. 12 at an opening ceremony sponsored by the Medical Hispanic Center of Excellence. The celebration begins at noon in the Medical School breezeway where Hispanic Excellence Awards will be given and music will accompany the celebration. In addition, the National Network of Latin American Medical Students will host a tamale plate sale, benefiting the organization.
Throughout the week, other events will serve to inform individuals about the Hispanic culture, and the Health Science Center community is encouraged to participate. A scientific poster display, designed by Health Science Center Hispanic students, will be held Wednesday, Sept. 14 from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Medical School lecture hall foyer; and a photograph exhibit, called “Children of Las Colonias: Through Our Own Lenses,” will be displayed in the auditorium foyer all week.
Hispanic Heritage Week is celebrated during the week of Sept. 16 (16 de Septiembre: El Grito de Independencia) – the day Mexico received independence from the Spanish rule. It also coincides with Hispanic Heritage Month, which is Sept. 15-Oct. 15.
