Obesity, type 2 diabetes and other health risks are rapidly increasing among our young people. That’s why the Center for South Texas Programs at the Health Science Center is hosting a “Moving into Our Teens” health fair that is free and open to the public.

The health fair will have special emphasis on pre-teens, teens and their parents, and will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 at the Regional Academic Health Center (RAHC) in Harlingen.

This is the second consecutive year that the Center for South Texas Programs has hosted the health fair. Special features include:

• Body mass index screening
• Blood pressure checks
• Scoliosis (curvature of the spine) screening
• Vision testing
• Information on healthy eating
• Information on ways to exercise, including displays from local sports groups and gyms
• Bike safety presentation and a Bike Rodeo sponsored by the Health Science Center’s police department
• Demonstration of motorcycle safety by faculty from Texas State Technical College

The goal of the health fair is to improve health by changing lifestyle factors.
