Beginning Wednesday, Oct. 27, the Center for Integrative Health in San Antonio [CIH] will be sponsoring lunch-hour presentations about complementary and alternative medicine.
These hands-on presentations are made possible by a grant from the American Medical Student’s Association’s Educational Development for Complementary and Alternative Medicine Curriculum Project and the National Institutes of Health National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. All presentations are free and open to all Health Science Center faculty and staff, as well as the public. Presentations will also be available for viewing as streaming video on the CIH website:

Founded in 2001 with a special grant from the Health Science Center’s president’s office, CIH is a multidisciplinary institute at the Health Science Center that seeks to promote excellence in the field of integrative healing through education, research and publication. CIH focuses on improving the understanding of the patterns of use, safety, and efficacy of complementary and alternative healing modalities commonly used in South Texas. CIH also seeks to provide a forum for interdisciplinary collaboration among national and international experts in the field of integrative healthcare.
From noon to 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 27 in Room 3.104A (Pestana Lecture Hall), Javier Villanueva, Ph.D., will present “Exploring Mind-Body Connections with Biofeedback.”
A licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Villanueva operates a premier psychophysiology and mental health clinic in San Antonio utilizing biofeedback as its primary vehicle of service administration. Dr. Villanueva will offer a hands-on discussion of the clinical applications of biofeedback techniques, including progressive relaxation, autogenic training, diaphragmatic breathing and guided imagery.
From noon to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 30 in Room 209L, Charles W. Kennedy, Jr. M.D., will present “Rheumatoid Arthritis and Complementary and Alternative Medicine.”
A diplomat of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and member of the Texas Orthopedic Association, Dr. Kennedy will present an overview of the state of recent clinical research on integrative medicine approaches to the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Topics covered will include botanical and other dietary supplements (e.g. Glucosamine, chondroitin), magnets and selected mind-body techniques.
