The Health Science Center’s determination to reach out and help the community through our annual State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC) hasn’t declined. In fact, this year’s campaign was another record-breaker with almost 40 percent participation from the Health Science Center community. Thanks to contributions from our colleagues, more than $327,000 was raised.

“Our goals were to have 30 percent participation and to raise $275,000,” said Robin Froman, R.N., Ph.D., dean of the School of Nursing and this year’s SECC chair. “The Health Science Center not only achieved our stated goals, but exceeded both!”

All donations benefit hundreds of state and local organizations, which include the United Way of San Antonio. In addition, 43 percent of our institution’s donations (approximately $140,000) was donated to organizations that are assisting the Hurricane Katrina victims.

“You should all be very proud of our Health Science Center community,” Dr. Froman said. “We participated in the SECC Pacesetter portion of the SECC this year and have raised the bar for future years. You have all done a wonderful job contributing to the health of both our local and broad community through your pledges. Thank you all so very much.”

The official campaign ended Sept. 30 but pledges will be accepted through the end of October.

Dr. Froman expressed special thanks to Rudy Gomez, assistant to the dean of the School of Nursing; Alexis Terrell, administrative assistant in the School of Nursing; Mary Yanes, computer support analyst; Elizabeth Shelton, manager of information systems; Kimberly Roth, programmer analyst; George Lyman, programmer analyst; and Paul Summers, administrator in acute nursing; and each department’s SECC coordinator for all of their hard work and dedication in making this campaign a huge success.
