Joseph C. Kobos, Ph.D., director of counseling services in the office of student services and professor in the department of psychiatry, will receive the Texas Psychological Association’s (TPA) most prestigious award for his active involvement in the TPA for the past 34 years.

The 2005 Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Dr. Kobos Friday, Nov. 4, in Houston.

“On behalf of the TPA’s Board of Trustees and the Awards Committee, this award is given to you for outstanding leadership in the TPA and the exemplary professional service that you have contributed to the psychology profession over the years,” wrote David White, C.A.E., executive director of the TPA.

Dr. Kobos has been a member of the TPA since 1971, shortly after joining the Health Science Center. He is a diplomate in both clinical and group psychology, and a fellow of both the American Psychological Association (APA) and American Group Psychotherapy Association. As a member of the APA, he served on the Committee of Accreditation, chaired the Board of Professional Affairs and has represented Texas for three terms on the Council of Representatives. He currently is on the Board of Directors of the American Group Psychotherapy Association.

“It is a pleasurable and humbling experience to be recognized by one’s peers,” Dr. Kobos said. “I’m extremely honored. One does not think of rewards or recognition when becoming involved in a task or project.”

Dr. Kobos has published articles on a broad range of psychological issues and has presented workshops in the United States and in international settings. He co-authored the book Brief Therapy: Short-Term Psychodynamic Intervention, and has since developed a series of demonstration videos to augment the text.
