Some of the Health Science Center’s most innovative research was presented last week at Core Day, where institutional core research facilities and related research support departments displayed posters about their capabilities. Throughout the Medical School lecture hall foyer, individuals were on-hand to describe and answer questions related to their activities.
“Several Core Day visitors remarked that they had been on campus for a number of years,” said Victoria Frohlich, Ph.D., associate director of the core optical imaging facility and director of institutional research cores. “Until visiting Core Day, many were unaware that particular research facilities were even available on campus.”
Alex Taylor, Ph.D., manages the X-ray crystallography core laboratory in the department of biochemistry under the direction of P. John Hart, Ph.D. Dr. Taylor described Core Day as an ideal opportunity for collaborative projects to result within our institution.
“This has also been a great time for others to ask questions – even just general questions,” Dr. Taylor said. “I was happy to provide some guidance to individuals who needed to know how to get started.”
Core Day is sponsored by the office of the vice president for research. Brian Herman, Ph.D., vice president for research, said based on the success of this year’s Core Day, the office plans to make it an annual event.
“The institution’s first core day, where faculty and staff had an opportunity to learn about various facilities and services that are available in support of their research activities, was a resounding success,” Dr. Herman said. “The posters describing these facilities and services they offer were visited by a large number of individuals, and a substantial exchange of educational and research information occurred.”
All of the material present at Core Day will be posted on the office of the vice president for research Web site.
