Take advantage of the Health Science Center Library's new Digital Collection designed to make learning and teaching more efficient. It’s an online collection of information that features three areas: 1.) medical illustrations, 2.) a historical collection, and 3.) full-text copies of theses and dissertations. This educational Web site is only available to faculty, staff and students of the Health Science Center; and a variety of the information is particularly helpful for professors to use to incorporate into their teaching strategies.

The digital collection currently exists; however, it is still in the early stages of development, said Mary Moore, Ph.D., director of libraries.

“We are still in the process of adding to this collection and I know it has potential to benefit everyone,” Dr. Moore said. “But, we want to know what our campus community would like to see. What do they want to access? What do they need?”

The medical illustrations section presents diagrams of anatomical regions of the body, Dr. Moore said, thanks to the help of David Baker, medical education supervisor in the department of educational media resources. Detailed descriptions thoroughly explain the function of what is pictured.

“Our graphics department has been extremely helpful in creating these illustrations,” Dr. Moore said. “Now it’s easy for students or professors to take one of these illustrations and use them in a slide show or presentation. The information is already available. They don’t need to re-create it.”

The historical collection demonstrates the history of medicine by using old books dating back to the 1500s and photographs taken in the 1800s and 1900s. The book A Century of Medicine in San Antonio written by P.I. Nixon Jr., M.D., has been loaded onto the Web site, providing hundreds of pages of the story of medicine in Bexar County.

Full-text copies of theses and dissertations written by students in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences are being added to the digital collection. “The theses and dissertations section of the Web site is great for our students who want to share their research without distributing it to the world online,” Dr. Moore said.

Dr. Moore said she hopes the Web site will eventually include video clips, entire PowerPoint presentations and possible interviews with the individuals who founded our university.

“There are so many things that get lost through the years,” Dr. Moore said. “Being able to archive this information onto the Web is amazing and I trust that our digital collection will continue to advance. We developed this Web site to help each other and hope our campus community will use it.”
