The department of medicine and the Frederic C. Bartter General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) invite first year fellows to attend “The 2006 Introduction to Clinical Investigation” (ICI) research course. The course will be delivered in a two-week intensive format, Feb. 6-17, 2006. During this time, fellows are relieved of all clinical responsibilities so they can fully engage in the learning activities.

The ICI course provides a comprehensive outline of the basic principles and research designs used in patient-oriented clinical research.

“We want this course to be an integral part of first-year trainees’ education,” said Juanita Sherfield, academic coordinator in the department of medicine. “Our goal is to provide an intensive learning experience where the fellows are actively engaged in the educational process.”
The learning objectives of the course are:
• To introduce fellows to basic principles, study designs and laboratory methodology employed in patient oriented research
• To know about and be able to effectively use resources to obtain background information for developing a research project
• To be able to interpret fundamental statistical tests and analyses in published research reports
• To develop linkages with research mentors within their own divisions and across disciplines in the department of medicine and within the Health Science Center.
• To know the ethical principles underlying the conduct of research
• To develop effective skills for communicating research results
