Health Science Center President Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D., last Tuesday welcomed a crowd of generous volunteers from the Health Science Center, the VA and University Hospital to a reception honoring the individuals’ charitable acts they’ve performed to assist our community.
“You are here because, individually and collectively, you have done something to make this a better place for someone else; and by doing that, you have made it a better place for us all,” Dr. Cigarroa said.
Attendees included individuals who cared for evacuees of Hurricane Katrina, the leaders of Gifts for Children and the Special Events Council, the Texas Medical Rangers, the departmental coordinators for the State Employee Charitable Campaign, those who offered their homes to Hurricane Rita evacuees and those who mentor at local schools.
“The volunteers who are here today represent San Antonio at its finest,” Dr. Cigarroa said. “The men and women who volunteer their time, talent, energy and resources exemplify the best qualities of that hardworking and optimistic American spirit.”
A unique band added ambiance to the occasion while the volunteers enjoyed hors d'oeuvres and viewed posters of individuals performing their charitable acts.
George Hernandez, J.D., president and chief executive officer of the University Health System, and Robert L. Jimenez, M.D., chairman of University Health System's Board of Managers, were also present to thank all volunteers.
