School of Nursing appoints department chairs

Kay Avant, Ph.D.
Chair, Department of Family Nursing Care


Dr. Avant has been appointed as the chair of the department of family nursing care in the School of Nursing. Prior to her appointment at the Health Science Center, Dr. Avant was an associate professor in the department of parent-child nursing at The University of Texas at Austin, where she also served as chair of that department. Dr. Avant’s research interests include maternal-infant issues such as breastfeeding and the effects of stress on maternal and infant outcomes. She is certified by the Board of Nurse Examiners and has earned numerous awards and honors throughout her career.

Adrianne D. Linton, Ph.D.
Chair, Department of Chronic Nursing Care


Dr. Linton has been appointed as the chair of the department of chronic nursing care in the School of Nursing. She has been a member of the Health Science Center faculty since 1977. Dr. Linton earned her bachelor of science in nursing degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, her master of nursing degree (medical/surgical) from the University of Mississippi and her Ph.D. in education from The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Linton’s research expertise focuses on behavioral symptoms associated with dementia in older adults, and the development of professional values in nursing students. She co-authored two nursing textbooks: Matteson, McConnell and Linton’s “Gerontological Nursing” and Linton and Maebius’ “Introduction to Medical-Surgical Nursing.” She has earned numerous research and education awards.
