The department of surgery is pleased to announce its last recipient of the 2005 Employee of the Month award. Virginia Barrera-Garcia, community educator specialist from the South Texas Poison Center located at the Regional Academic Health Center in Harlingen, is the deserving recipient of the award for the month of December.
“Virginia is an educator dedicated to assisting some 19 counties with poison prevention awareness programs in an effort to reduce morbidity and mortality due to poisoning,” her colleague said. “Her monthly activity calendar is always fully-booked, yet she always has a very positive attitude and is willing to help anyone.”
Barrera-Garcia coordinates Spanish and English presentations with public health and non-profit agencies, public and private schools, and day care centers. Her dedication earned her a $100 Simon Gift Card that can be used anywhere VISA is accepted and she’s now eligible to receive the Employee of the Year Award – a Royal Caribbean Cruise.
The goal of the Employee of the Month and Year program is to recognize outstanding performance by non-faculty staff in surgery. The department of surgery recognizes that its staff plays a significant role in determining the success of the department.
