The Health Science Center’s Srinivasa Prasad, M.D., associate professor of radiology, has been awarded the prestigious Melvin M. Figley Fellowship, granted by the American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS). Dr. Prasad was one of only two individuals in North America to be selected.

The purpose of the Figley Fellowship is to encourage bright, promising radiologists to continue with an academic career, to enhance their credentials, and to encourage interest in good radiology journalism. The Figley Fellows spend several weeks in the American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR) editorial office to learn the fundamentals of medical writing, manuscript preparation and editing, peer review, medical journalism ethics, and the mechanics of journal publication. Personal tutorials are given by AJR editors and editorial staff.

“I am delighted by this news,” Dr. Prasad said. “I believe it is a great opportunity to learn the intricacies of radiology journalism. It is my privilege to share this honor with this institution; and I personally thank my chairman, Dr. Dodd, for his steadfast support and constant encouragement.”

Dr. Prasad received his M.D. degree from Bangalore Medical College in India and completed his post-doctoral training at the Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. He joined the Health Science Center in 2003.

Dr. Prasad’s most recent honors include: the ARRS’s prestigious Silver Medal Award presented at the society’s 105th Annual Meeting in New Orleans; a Magna Cum Laude award, presented at the 90th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA); and two Certificates of Merit for his outstanding exhibits, which were also presented at the RSNA meeting. The RSNA is one of the world’s largest annual medical meetings with attendance of more than 60,000.

“The Figley Fellowship is a highly-competitive award that is given to the best and brightest in the radiology community,” said Gerald Dodd III, M.D., professor and Stewart R. Reuter Distinguished Chair of radiology. “The selection of Dr. Prasad as one of this year’s participants is a direct testament of his outstanding contributions to academic radiology.”

The Figley Fellowship is designed to improve the quality of radiology journals by teaching the fundamentals of medical journalism to academicians, train manuscript reviewers and future editors, and provide core teachers of medical journalism in radiology departments around the country.
