While changes are occurring all around campus, several modifications that could affect all Health Science Center employees are happening in the office of human resources. Seven unique employees have recently joined our Health Science Center community and the office of human resources is very pleased to introduce them.

“The addition of these seven employees is a large step toward achieving our vision of taking the office of human resources’ services from forms processors to being consultants and problem solvers for our customers,” said Brett Morris, assistant vice president for human resources. “To accomplish this goal, a series of fundamental changes needed to take place in the office, including the strategic restructuring and reassignment of the existing staff, and adding key staff members in areas in which our customers were being underserved. Ultimately, with these and other planned changes, the office should become more aware of our customers and their needs, more flexible in adapting to meet those needs, and more proactive in anticipating the future needs of the institution.”

Stephen Middleton, senior employee relations advisor

If you need some extra guidance in your workplace, Stephen Middleton is sure to be helpful. He assists the Health Science Center in many aspects as an advisor to managers, supervisors and employees. He analyzes workplace conflicts and assists in problem solving techniques – all while ensuring fairness for the individuals involved.

“I develop initiatives and strategies to better provide comprehensive employee relations services,” Middleton said. “I want to ensure that employees and supervisors have a toolkit available for their use so we can all have good employee relations.”

Middleton comes to the Health Science Center from The University of Texas at Austin where he performed similar duties.

“This is a great place to work,” Middleton said of the Health Science Center. “While working with management, I have found they truly want what is the best for employees.”

Steven Corbell, associate director of human resources for employment and compensation

Corbell is not a stranger to The University of Texas System. He joins the Health Science Center from The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.

Corbell now plays a key role not only in the human resources office, but for the entire university. Among many duties, Corbell is responsible for leading the compensation section of human resources in collecting, analyzing and preparing compensation and policy for the university. He assists in developing compensation plans that meet the Health Science Center’s objectives, and he gives direction to the employment section of human resources.

“I hope that by providing guidance, leadership and direction in the office, and recommending strategic plans, the Health Science Center will continue to recruit and retain high-caliber employees,” Corbell said. “I’ve been extremely happy with my new position here at the Health Science Center and I look forward to all the opportunities our institution has to offer.”

Joshua Mathis, Web specialist

Noticed a new look to the human resources Web site? Since Joshua Mathis joined the Health Science Center, the Web site has evolved. But, Mathis said what you see now is only an interim Web site until a more enhanced site is completed.

“The development of a new, official human resources site is in the works,” Mathis said. “We hope to develop the definitive human resources Web site.”

He is responsible for designing and managing a complex Web site for human resources customers, and for maintaining the site on a continual basis. Mathis will also assist with the PeopleSoft upgrade project that begins this year.

“Working in human resources gives me the opportunity to help virtually every Health Science Center employee,” Mathis said. “I find that very gratifying.”

Among many things, Turner is a desk side support technician responsible for local area network management, troubleshooting, providing technical support and conducting staff training on hardware or software.
