The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) selected Ashok Kumar, M.D., professor of family and community medicine, to serve on the AAFP’s commission on membership and member services. Dr. Kumar was appointed by the AAFP’s board of directors.
The commission on membership and member services has a variety of duties. Among many things, Dr. Kumar will assist with recruitment retention, life-stage career services, international membership, special needs and awards of the AAFP.
“I have been a member of the AAFP since 1992,” Dr. Kumar said. “So, I am honored to be selected to serve on this commission.”
The AAFP is one of the largest national medical organizations made up of more than 94,000 family physicians, family medicine residents and medical students. To be eligible for membership members must show evidence of having completed 150 hours of continuing education acceptable to the academy’s commission on continuing medical education. The 150 hours must have accumulated during the three years immediately preceding application.
Founded in 1947, the AAFP’s mission is to improve the health of patients, families and communities by serving the needs of members with professionalism and creativity.
Dr. Kumar has held many leadership positions at the AAFP and the Texas Academy of Family Physicians (TAFP). He currently serves as the parliamentarian of the TAFP.
