sprucej@uthscsa.edu With his background in both the education and health fields, Robert A. Kaminski, D.D.S., M.S., Ed.D., has unique qualities that have already been beneficial in his new role as assistant vice president for academic administration. Dr. Kaminski joined the Health Science Center Jan. 1.
No stranger to The University of Texas System, he came to the Health Science Center after serving 10 years at The University of Texas Health Science Center Dental Branch in Houston. He held the positions of chair of the department of general dentistry, associate dean for clinical education and director of quality assurance.
“Dr. Kaminski is an asset to our institution,” said Theresa Chiang, Ed.D., vice president for academic administration. “He has previously been a teaching faculty member, a departmental chair and a clinical dean at state institutions. His years with The UT System bring a wealth of knowledge and a different prospective to issues that are being addressed here.”
Dr. Kaminski received his D.D.S. degree in 1976. While at Syracuse University, he decided he was also interested in academics and went back to school to receive his master’s degree in educational administration. In 1987, he earned his Ed.D. degree from the University of Georgia.
“I am honored to be in this new position that allows me to help serve and manage academic programs,” he said. “I’ve been on both the faculty and administrative sides, which helps when communicating with faculty and understanding administrative policies.”
Dr. Kaminski has already plunged into a variety of areas in the office of the vice president for academic administration. Since managing the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) reaffirmation of accreditation process is a primary responsibility in the office, Dr. Kaminski has been asked to be the point person for the SACS liaisons at the Health Science Center.
“Right now I’m assisting with the strategic plan and SACS,” he said. “I’m also helping out with the newly-launched Academic Center for Excellence in Teaching (ACET).”
Dr. Kaminski served on SACS committees at the Health Science Center in Houston at his previous position at the Medical College of Georgia.
An active member of the Faculty Senate at the Health Science Center in Houston, Dr. Kaminski said he looks forward to getting to know the members here, as well as joining other campus organizations.
“During the past 25 years I have enjoyed the opportunity to work with faculty, staff and students in a variety of roles,” Dr. Kaminski said. “I look forward to working closely with the Health Science Center’s community as we gear up for the SACS accreditation in 2008.”
Dr. Chiang said Dr. Kaminski’s arrival has already been a tremendous experience. “He is a very driven individual who likes to get things done. I feel a sense of serenity now that he is on board.”
