Approximately 200 junior and senior faculty members joined together for discussions concerning career development and promotion at two two-hour workshops held Jan. 20 and Feb. 3 in the Nursing School auditorium. However, if you were unable to attend, the opportunity to view the workshops is available. The first 30 minutes of each workshop were recorded for your convenience.

To view the Jan. 20 workshop designed for non-tenure track faculty members, click on: 129.111.156.134/videostream/faculty/P&TNonTenureTrack.wmv. The Feb. 3 workshop designed for tenure track faculty members can be viewed at: 129.111.156.134/videostream/faculty/P&TTenureTrack.wmv.

A faculty coalition hosted the workshops that provided updates on the promotion and tenure process. Theresa Chiang, Ed.D., vice president for academic administration; Jan Patterson, M.D., vice chair of infectious diseases and current chair of the promotions, tenure and appointments committee (PTAC); and Lee McAlister-Henn, Ph.D., deputy chair of biochemistry and immediate-past chair of the PTAC, provided an overview of the workshop and additional information regarding promotion and tenure.

Faculty members who attended were able to gather in small groups for open round-table discussions, which were designed to exchange strategies for successfully guiding tenure and non-tenure track faculty.

“I am extremely happy with the turn outs,” Dr. Chiang said. “The contributions of the co-sponsors and the senior faculty members serving as discussion leaders are invaluable!”

Keith Krolick, professor of microbiology, said he hopes to see the workshops continue to grow and succeed.

"The workshops highlighted very important things,” Dr. Krolick said. “They pointed to some important bridge-building that we need to continuously encourage between the faculty-at-large and the institutional promotion and tenure committee, as well as with the administration. They also brought to light several important ways in which we might further improve our faculty development efforts for helping our own faculty colleagues achieve a greater level of success. It was made clear how much we can accomplish when a diverse coalition of faculty or faculty organizations get together to accomplish a single goal. The success of the workshops was a direct reflection of their combined efforts."
