HSC junior pharmacologist is recipient of prestigious award

The department of pharmacology is pleased to announce that Weirong Zhang, Ph.D., a postdoctoral fellow, will be recognized by the American Physiological Society (APS) as a recipient of the 2006 Caroline tum Suden/Frances A. Hellebrandt Professional Opportunity Award.

Dr. Zhang will receive a certificate of recognition and a $500 cash prize, which will be presented April 4 during the Experimental Biology 2006 meeting in San Francisco, Calif.

The Caroline tum Suden/Frances A. Hellebrandt Professional Opportunity Award provides funds for junior APS members to attend and participate fully in the Experimental Biology meeting. The award is granted to as many as 36 male or female graduate students or postdoctoral fellows. To be considered for the award, the candidate must first be an author of an abstract submitted to APS.

Dr. Zhang received his doctorate from the University of Florida at Gainesville. In 2004, he received the Excellence in Doctoral Studies Award from the College of Veterinary Medicine, as well as the Best Graduate Student Platform Presentation at Phi Zeta Day Award. He has already authored or co-authored nine publications and has taken part in presenting 15 abstracts.
