Continuous service…dedicated…caring – these are only a few of the many words that describe the exceptional Rebecca Huston, M.D., M.P.H., clinical associate professor of pediatrics. In fact, her dedication is so widely recognized that she is one of only nine women to be inducted into the prestigious San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame.
Dr. Huston will be officially inducted into the health professional category of the organization Thursday, March 2.
“She is extremely deserving of this award,” said Gale Haradon, Ph.D., O.T.R., F.A.O.T.A., professor and chair of the occupational therapy department. Dr. Haradon is also a member of the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame and she nominated Dr. Huston for the award. “Dr. Huston is a humble individual who deserves recognition for the many things she has done for the community.”
The organizing of the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame began about 20 years ago when Texas Gov. Mark White proclaimed a “Women in Texas Today” week. As the move to recognize more women expanded, a San Antonio woman named Dr. Gloria Jo Floyd and others created the San Antonio Women's Hall of Fame. Its goal is to recognize exceptional San Antonio women in various areas of work. The organization also awards deserving high school and college students with scholarships.
“Dr. Huston has had such a positive impact on the community,” Dr. Haradon said. “I’ve observed her with numerous individuals. She’s so caring and interacts wonderfully with her patients. Her communication skills and her empathy for the families really make a difference.”
In 2004, Dr. Huston was selected by pediatric residents as the “faculty member most dedicated to community service.” Within the same year, she was also awarded the Texas Pediatric Executive Board award.
Since 2001, Dr. Huston has been the local medical director of the Reach Out and Read program in the Children’s Health Center. Reach Out and Read is a national, nonprofit program that seeks to improve early literacy by intervening with families during their visits to the clinic for well-child checkups.
In 2002, Dr. Huston was named the board president of the Friends of Alamo City Reach Out and Read program – the organization that supports all Reach Out and Read programs in San Antonio.
Dr. Huston’s other achievements include being named director of the pediatric resident continuity clinic at the Health Science Center in 2000, which has approximately 9,000 clinic visits per year. She is also the co-chair of the parenting committee of the Texas Pediatric Society. The parenting committee educates pediatricians in Texas about important issues relating to parenting.
After completing her residency and fellowship at the Health Science Center, Dr. Huston joined the faculty in 1987 as an assistant instructor.
Congratulations to Dr. Huston on all of her achievements.
