After serving as interim dean of the Medical School for 10 months, Thomas Mayes, M.D., M.B.A., concludes his appointment this week and returns to pediatrics as chair of the department. The several advancements he has made to the Medical School and the goals he set while he served as interim dean have created a lasting benefit to our institution.
“I thank Dr. Mayes for his continuous dedication to the Medical School and the Health Science Center,” said President Francisco G. Cigarroa, M.D. “He has served with such distinction and is truly one of the most outstanding and well-respected individuals I know.”
Dr. Mayes was named chair of the pediatrics department shortly before he was selected as interim dean of the Medical School. While Dr. Mayes took the additional responsibilities, John Mangos, M.D., professor and the Eloise Alexander Distinguished Chair of pediatric pulmonology, drew upon his skills as former, long-time chair of the department of pediatrics. He served as the acting chair.
“Dr. Mangos continues to provide exemplary leadership to the department, as he has for many years,” Dr. Cigarroa said. “I thank him for so graciously stepping in and, again, serving the pediatrics department with his excellent leadership.”

Dr. Mayes’ colleagues surprised him last week with a celebration luncheon featuring a slideshow and gifts showing appreciation for his dedication.
“I have my 40th birthday feeling right now!” Dr. Mayes said when he walked through the door. “Thank you all so much for being here and for doing this for me.”
Minnette Son, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics and Dr. Mayes’ wife, attended his surprise celebration that was given by the medical dean’s office.
“To my wife, I thank you for your continuous support and advice that have helped me through everything,” Dr. Mayes said.
Dr. Mayes has provided outstanding leadership to the university in many other roles: associate dean for clinical affairs of the Medical School; chair (and interim chair) of the department of pediatrics; president and chief executive officer (CEO) of University Physicians Group and a host of other leadership roles. Dr. Mayes is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Baylor University and a Cum Laude graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He is Board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric critical care medicine.
He served in the USAF Medical Corps and joined the Health Science Center as a full-time faculty member in 1994. He has also been a trusted advisor and counselor to many of the university’s top leaders.
“I know Dr. Mayes will continue to play a major leadership role in the success of the Health Science Center,” Dr. Cigarroa said.
