Patch Adams, M.D., the physician, clown and social activist made famous by Robin Williams on the silver screen, will bring his laughter, joy and creativity to the Health Science Center this week.
True to his belief that a merry heart is important in the healing process, Dr. Adams will discuss “Living a Life of Joy.” The event begins at noon Thursday in lecture hall 3.102B near the Briscoe Library on the Central Campus. Dr. Adams’ visit is sponsored by the Medical School’s Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics.
The event is free and open to the community. Pizza will be served. Visitors are asked to enter through the Briscoe Library.
Hunter “Patch” Adams founded the Gesundheit! Hospital Project, and he has traveled around the world as a social activist. He saw that his patients’ loudest cry was for compassion and attention – and he responded with his time and the credo that all physician-patient interactions should be sprinkled with fun.
Dr. Adams is proud that clowns are now a regular presence in hospitals on every continent. He has taken clowns to Russia, Bosnia, China, El Salvador, Korea and Haiti, to name some of the countries, and his message of joy and fun is now part of the medical dialog around the world.
