Want to be trained in core areas that are necessary to conduct safe clinical and transitional research? Health Science Center faculty members, staff, students, residents and fellows are invited to apply for the Master of Science in Clinical Investigation (MSCI) degree program. Classes begin on Aug. 28 and applications are now being accepted.
The scope and sequence of the courses are structured so attendees will be able to strategically incorporate their learning into their monitored research projects. The goal is to prepare candidates to be able to design and implement all phases of patient-oriented clinical research, and effectively lead research teams.
Teams of instructors who are qualified to teach selected topics will present the courses.
Core areas include:
1. Responsible conduct of research
2. Research methods and study design
3. Biostatistics and data analysis
4. Data management
5. Integrating molecular biology with clinical research
6. Scientific communication
7. Health services research
The MSCI program, established in 2000, is an interdisciplinary program created to train health care professionals in the conduct of clinical investigation. It seeks to help forge the bridge from basic research to human studies. All trainees will become proficient in the preparation of clinical research protocols, informed consent documents, grant proposals and preliminary research manuscripts.
The MSCI Program is funded by a Clinical Research Curriculum Award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded to the Health Science Center and its General Clinical Research Center (GCRC).
The application deadline is Aug. 1. For more information, call (210) 567-4631 or send an e-mail to Michael Lichtenstein, M.D., professor of medicine in the GCRC:
