Learn about a wide variety of research topics, including studies going on at the Health Science Center, at the 2006 Dental Science Symposium. Wednesday, April 19 in the Medical School lecture hall foyer, students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty members will present their research, and other special presentations will take place throughout the day.
“Transitional Research from Theory to Therapy” is the symposium’s theme and David Wong, D.M.D., D.M.Sc., director of the University of California at Los Angeles Collaborative Oral Fluid Diagnostic Research Center, will be the distinguished speaker. Dr. Wong will present “Emerging Technologies and Targets for Saliva Diagnostics” – a topic that will allow him to share his expertise in saliva-based diagnostics for detecting disease. He’ll also discuss “lab on a chip” technology in which saliva is used to monitor normal health and other diseases. Dr. Wong’s presentation begins at 8:30 a.m. in Room 3.104A.
Several Health Science Center faculty members will also present their research in Room 3.104A. Presenters include:
• Steven Milam, D.D.S., Ph.D., professor and chair of the oral and maxillofacial surgery who holds the Hugh B. Tilson Endowed Chair. Dr. Milam will discuss osteonecrosis of the jaw.
• Ron Verrett, D.D.S., M.S., assistant professor of prosthodontics. Dr. Verrett will discuss diagnosis and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea, and its correlation to cardiovascular problems.
• Geza Terezhalmy, D.D.S., M.A., professor of dental diagnostic science. Dr. Terezhalmy will discuss the role of clinical trials, and the synergy that is require between pharmaceutical companies and scientists to translate ideas into novel therapies.
The symposium is made possible by several sponsors, including the San Antonio chapter of the American Association of Dental Researchers, Colgate, the dental dean’s office, Craniofacial Oral-Biology Student Training in Academic Research (COSTAR), Dentsply International, Texas Academy of General Dentistry and the Student Research Group.
