Dedicated, hard-working and dependable individuals don’t go unnoticed in the facilities management department. In fact, those employees are often honored for their excellence by receiving the Employee of the Quarter Award. Justin Lowe, plumber leader, and Estella Castro, senior administrative clerk, are the two individuals who are recognized for the second quarter of 2006.

Although Lowe has only spent a short time as the plumbing shop leader in facilities management, he has managed to keep up with a very heavy workload. He has earned the respect of his colleagues, and consistently demonstrates a positive attitude while he continues to develop as the leader of the plumbing shop. Often, Lowe spends weekends with shop personnel working on jobs that must be performed after hours to prevent disrupting academic and research departments. He has also spent a considerable amount of time to better organize his operation and make it more efficient. Lowe recently completed supervisor training and has put his training to good use, leading by example. Colleagues are proud to call him the Employee of the Quarter.

For three-and-a-half years, Castro has served the facilities management department. It may appear that her main focus is managing the vacation and sick leave balance program. However, her plate is full of several other things. In addition to managing this function, her knowledge and her input of personnel data into the PeopleSoft HR system is both timely and extremely accurate. Castro will accept any task willingly and completes any task at hand in a cheerful professional manner. She has unselfishly been the coordinator for or assisted with the March of Dimes, Gifts for Children and State Employee Charitable Campaigns for facilities management. Colleagues say her refreshing smile and "can-do" attitude are as welcome today as they were on her first day of work. The department is proud to recognize Castro as part of the team.
